U.S. envoy may scuttle peace mission As issues grow with both sides, Zinni could end two-week effort

RAMALLAH, West Bank--U.S. peace envoy Anthony Zinni wasconsidering whether to continue his two-week cease-fire mission inthe face of Israel's refusal to deal with Yasser Arafat and thePalestinian leader's failure to carry out his promise to close downextremist installations.

Zinni, who has been trying to create an atmosphere in which Arafatcould move decisively against the militant Hamas and Islamic Jihadgroups, will decide by Sunday whether to give up on his efforts tonegotiate a cease-fire. The United States and Israel have labeledboth Hamas and Islamic Jihad, responsible for a new wave of bloodyattacks against Israelis, terrorist organizations.
