U.S. District Court Judge Harold M. Fong of Hawaii, who prompted an important constitutional ruling and became involved in the tangled legal affairs of Ferdinand Marcos, the former president of the Philippines, died Thursday at Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu. The lifelong resident of Honolulu was 56.

The cause was complications from heart surgery, for which he was admitted Sunday, the court announced.
