Qld: Customs seize tobacco in Brisbane

Almost 15 tonnes of undeclared tobacco has been seized from a shipping container in Brisbane.

Australian Customs says on December 13 a shipping container .. labelled as containing
noodles .. was selected for X-ray in Brisbane.

Inside officers found almost three-thousand cartons each containing about five kilograms
of tobacco.

Customs says if the cartons found there way onto the market the revenue evaded would
have amounted to more than five million dollars.

Following the discovery officers searched several Sydney homes and are expecting to lay charges.

Under the Customs Act .. penalties up to five times the amount of duty payable can
be imposed on those convicted of smuggling .. conveying or possessing smuggled goods ..

as well as jail sentences.
