NEC Corporation (NEC) announced today the release of the V850+J?, a new Java accelerator for the V850 Series of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers that can speed up code execution in embedded Java applications by 300 to 500 percentNote 1. The V850+J is available as an IP macro for NEC's cell-based IC products.

As the Internet society evolves through the spread of broadband and wireless networks, we anticipate an era of ubiquitous-style computing in which the embedded devices used in all consumer and industrial applications will be connected via a networkNote 2.

A major effect of this ubiquitous network concept is likely to be an increase in the popularity of Java, a programming language that can be used commonly for all the devices connected to the network. The challenge, however, will be to provide an environment in which the execution of Java codes, particularly in embedded applications, can be achieved quickly, efficiently, and cheaply.

NEC responds to this challenge by offering a new accelerator technology to lay the foundations for an innovative lineup of next-generation network products.

Major features of V850+J

(1) Realizes a performance three to five times higher than when Java is executed using V850 software only, and combined with the high performance of the V850 Series, provides fast and efficient Java operation. (The exact performance increase depends on the application.)

(2) Exploits the superior power efficiency of the V850 Series to enable high-speed Java execution in battery-driven applications.

(3) Flexible support of a wide range of Java classes enables use in a variety of applications.

These features allow NEC to provide an outstanding execution environment for embedded Java applications and give vital impetus to the realization of a ubiquitous computing era.

NEC has designed the new V850+J Java accelerator as an IP macro and is currently developing cell-based ICs that incorporate this macro together with the V850E CPU core in projects for a number of customers. Plans to include this macro in standard products are also in the pipelineA demonstration of the V850+J can be seen at the NEC booth at the MST2001 Embedded Technology Conference and Exhibition held in Tokyo, Japan on November 20.

NEC aims to enhance its lineup of high-performance V850E core products for high-end applications and compact V850ES core products for low-end applications, while at the same time developing a range of ASSPs (Application Specific Standard Products) with on-chip peripheral functions optimized for a variety of applications. Moreover, by promoting the development of system LSIs that incorporate the V850E core, NEC will be in a position to offers customers the ultimate solution for their system development.
